Crossbar Bearing
Replace a worn X-axis crossbar bearing: disconnect the print head wiring, remove the LED strips and crossbar, swap the bearing, then re-tension the belts.
The crossbar bearings are critical for the smooth and precise motion of the X-axis. Over time, these bearings may wear down and require replacement. This procedure involves the complete disassembly of the print head wiring, removal of the LED bars, and removal of the X-axis crossbar. This is an advanced procedure that requires careful attention to detail, especially during reassembly.

Tools and Materials
- Hex screwdriver (2.0 mm)
- Phillips (PH) screwdriver
- 8 mm wrench
- New replacement bearing(s)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Disconnecting the Print Head Electronics
Take photos of wiring before disconnecting
Before you begin, take detailed photos of the wiring inside the print head's terminal block. This is critical for correct reassembly.
- Disconnect the main extruder motor cable by gripping the connector body, not the wires.
- Referring to the photo you took, carefully disconnect all head wires from the terminal block: heater, thermistor, and all fan wires.
- Disconnect the cable chain from the print head assembly. Support the chain so it does not pull on the remaining wiring.
- Gently remove the terminal block from its mount and set it aside with the wiring.
2. Removing the LEDs
- Locate the screws securing the LED strips on the gantry.
- Using a Phillips (PH) screwdriver, loosen the screws. You may not need to remove them completely.
- Gently slide the LED strips out of their holders by hand.
- Support the released strips and move them away from the crossbar without bending the strips or pulling their cables.
3. Removing the Belts From the Crossbar
The belt tensioners stay installed during this procedure. You only release the belts from their clamps and remove them from the crossbar pulleys and rollers.
Full belt removal and installation guide
This section contains the main steps required to remove the crossbar. For complete belt routing, clamp orientation, belt-end lengths, installation, and tensioning instructions, see Belt Replacement.
Remove Both Y-Axis Belts
- Turn each front Y-belt tensioning knob counter-clockwise as far as possible while leaving about two full turns of thread engaged. Do not remove the knobs, springs, washers, or tensioner assemblies.
- At the first Y belt, use a 2 mm hex screwdriver to loosen the single screw on the toothed clamp plate. Do not remove the tensioner.
- Slide the belt sideways out from under the loosened clamp plate. Remove it from the motor pulley, rollers, and crossbar. Photograph the routing and tooth orientation before lifting it away.
- Repeat the same clamp-release and belt-removal steps for the Y belt on the opposite side. Both Y tensioners remain installed.
Remove the Tool 0 Belt
- Remove the fan shroud and wire guard from Tool 0 by unscrewing their two mounting bolts.
- Disconnect the fan wire. Press the orange release tabs with a 2 mm hex screwdriver while supporting the terminal block from behind. Record the wire order before removal.
- Loosen the two screws on the front of the extruder carriage that retain the tool interface, then remove the Tool 0 Print Head Assembly.
- At the rear of Tool 0, loosen all four belt-clamp screws. Photograph the belt ends before pulling them out: the left end is the short end, approximately 10 mm, and the right end is the tensioning end.
- Pull both belt ends from the clamp, then remove the Tool 0 belt from the crossbar rollers and motor pulley. Document the complete routing and tooth orientation.
Remove the Tool 1 Belt
Tool 1 is mirrored and its clamp is accessible from the back of the machine. You do not need to remove its Print Head Assembly, fan shroud, or wire guard.
- At the rear of Tool 1, loosen all four belt-clamp screws. Photograph the belt ends: the right end is the short end, approximately 10 mm, and the left end is the tensioning end.
- Pull both ends from the clamp, then remove the Tool 1 belt from the crossbar rollers and motor pulley. Document the complete routing and tooth orientation.
- Confirm that all four belts are free from the crossbar and that both Y tensioner assemblies remain installed on the printer.
4. Removing the H - Assembly
The H - Assembly is the complete crossbar and both Y-rails removed together as one unit.
Support the complete H - Assembly
The H - Assembly is held by four corner screws. Support the entire assembly while loosening them. Once the assembly is free, the carriages can slide along and off the Y-rails. Keep the assembly controlled and do not tilt it abruptly.
- Make sure the bed is fully lowered. If it is not, lower it carefully by hand before loosening the H - Assembly.
- Locate the four corner screws that secure the H - Assembly to the printer frame. Confirm that the cables and all four belts are already disconnected and cannot catch during removal.
- Support the H - Assembly with one hand while loosening the four corner screws one at a time with the other hand. Continue supporting the complete assembly as the last screw is removed.
- Put the screwdriver aside. Hold the freed H - Assembly securely with both hands and prevent the carriages from sliding off the ends of the Y-rails.
- Slowly rotate and tilt the H - Assembly only as much as needed to clear the printer frame, then guide it out through the front doors. Watch both carriages throughout the movement so they do not slide off the Y-rails.
5. Replacing the Bearing
- Place the removed H - Assembly on a clean, stable work surface and turn it over to access the underside of the crossbar.
- Remove the mounting screws that secure the Y-rail carriages to the crossbar. Support the Y-rails and separate the carriages from the crossbar far enough to expose the PH screw heads underneath. Keep the carriages on the Y-rails so they cannot slide off.
- Identify the bearing or bearings to replace. Photograph the bolt, nut, washer, spacer, bearing, and plate arrangement before loosening anything.
- With the Y-rail carriages moved out of the way, place a Phillips (PH) screwdriver on the now-accessible screw head. Hold it stationary while using an 8 mm wrench to loosen the nut on the opposite side of the bearing plate.
- Remove the plate, old bearing, washers, and spacers. Lay the hardware out in removal order.
- Clean the bearing mount and inspect the plate, bolt, washers, and spacers for wear or damage.
- Place the new bearing and all washers and spacers in the same order and orientation as the original parts.
- Reinstall the bearing plate. Hold the bolt with the Phillips screwdriver and tighten the nut with the 8 mm wrench.
- Rotate the new bearing by hand. It must turn smoothly without grinding, binding, or side-to-side play.
- Align the Y-rail carriages with their original positions on the crossbar. Reinstall and tighten their mounting screws while keeping both Y-rails correctly oriented and parallel.
6. Reassembly and Final Checks
- Hold the H - Assembly with both hands, control the Y-rail carriages, and guide the assembly through the front doors at the same angle used during removal. Rotate it carefully into its installed orientation inside the frame.
- Align the H - Assembly with the four corner mounting points. Support it while starting all four screws loosely, then tighten the four screws evenly only after every screw is correctly engaged.
- Reinstall all four belts by following the complete Belt Replacement procedure. Route each belt through its correct pulleys and rollers, verify that the teeth face inward, and confirm that no belt is twisted.
- Feed the Y belts under their toothed clamp plates. At the rear tool clamps, leave approximately 10 mm on the left end for Tool 0 and on the right end for Tool 1. Tighten the tool-clamp screws in a cross pattern, then complete all Tool 0 reassembly steps from the Belt Replacement guide. Leave final belt tension for Step 10 below.
- Slide the LED strips back into their holders and tighten the holder screws. Make sure the strips and cables cannot contact any moving belt or the crossbar.
- Reinstall the terminal block and cable chain. Route the wiring without pinching it or leaving it in the path of a belt.
- Reconnect the heater, thermistor, and fan wires by matching the reference photo from Step 1. See the Wiring Schematic if needed.
- Reconnect the extruder motor cable and verify that every connector is fully seated.
- Move the crossbar and each tool slowly by hand through their full range. Stop if you feel binding, hear grinding, or see a belt or cable rubbing.
- Once all hardware is reassembled, you must re-tension the belts. See Belt Tensioning for detailed instructions.
Belt tensioning is mandatory after reassembly
Before powering on the printer or starting a print, you must properly tension the belts. Failure to do so will result in poor print quality and potential print failures.
