Z-Motor Alignment
When one of the three Z-axis lead screws is misaligned with its linear rail, the build plate gets stuck at the bottom of its travel. The motor tries to turn, you hear grinding, and the plate does not move – most often on the rear center lead screw. Realigning the motor at the bottom of the screw's travel fixes it.
Confirm the symptom before you loosen anything. A motor that makes no sound at all is not an alignment problem – see Motor Diagnostics. A screw that jams above the bottom third of its travel is usually a lubrication problem – see Lubrication.

Tools and Materials
- 2 mm Hex screwdriver (hex wrench) – for the motor mounting screws
- Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) – only if you also need to clean old grease off the lead screws
1. Confirm the Symptom

2. Free the Build Plate
The bed has to be raised before you can reach the motor screws.
Movement Without Homing ignores the endstops
This macro disables position verification. Move in small increments only, keep the path clear, and stop before any axis reaches its physical limit.
- In the Web Interface, open the Dashboard tab and run Macros → System → Movement Without Homing. This lets you jog the Z-axis without homing first.
Build plate and nozzles may still be hot
The build plate reaches high temperatures and stays hot long after a print. Let everything cool to room temperature before you put a hand under the plate.
- Open the printer door and place your hand under the corner that is stuck.
- Jog the Z-axis upward in small increments (-25 mm) while gently guiding or lifting that corner by hand. Once the jammed screw breaks free, the plate rises on its own.
3. Loosen the Motor Mounting Screws
- With the bed raised to a comfortable height, locate the four screws at the bottom of the affected lead screw motor.
- Using the 2 mm hex screwdriver, loosen each screw about half a turn. The motor should be free to shift slightly.
Loosen only – do not remove the screws
Half a turn is enough. Removing the screws drops the motor and leaves you reassembling it under the bed.
4. Lower the Bed and Retighten
Lowering the bed with the motor loose lets the lead screw find its natural position against the linear rail. That is what does the alignment – the screws only lock in the result.
- From the Web Interface, jog the Z-axis in positive increments to lower the bed all the way down. It should move smoothly, with no grinding.
- With the bed fully down, tighten the loosened screws one at a time, starting with the ones you can reach easily.
- If a screw is blocked by the bed, raise the bed slightly, tighten it, and lower the bed again.
5. Test the Z-Axis
- Move the Z-axis up and down through its full travel several times.
- Listen. There should be no grinding and no hesitation at any point.
- If it still jams, check the lead screw lubrication and the motor connector on the expansion board, then repeat the alignment.
